Over the weekend the US Food and Drug Administration and Centers of Disease Control and Prevention put an end to the pause in the use of Johnson & Johnson COVID 19 Vaccine following incidents and reports of blood clots in a small number of cases. The US FDA and CDC authorized the resumption of the J&J vaccines.

As the government is trying to improve the vaccine roll-outs with 1,271,808 already (3.30.2021, John Hopkins data) fully or partially vaccinated, the improvement in the downward trend of cases we see this month might be short-lived. Yesterday, the CDC Director emotionally warned Americans of an “impending doom” as COVID-19 cases rise within the 45 states (WBZ4). America may face the fourth surge because of the easily transmissible variants! Despite the three vaccines already on deck, we are not off the hook yet.

As we close the year 2020, all of us would take a few deep breaths and think that there is no way to describe what the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020” has been like in the healthcare field, nursing, and community unless we lived it ourselves. Nursing ranks are filled with Filipino Americans. The pandemic is taking an outsized toll on them

Debbie Accad, 72, a clinical nursing coordinator for the Detroit VA Medical Center, died from complications of the coronavirus on March 30. Celia Yap-Banago, 69, a “fireball” of a nurse who worked for 40 years at a hospital in Kansas City, died last week. Both women were just weeks away from retirement.

As an organization, we recognize the pandemic impact to public health and the directives from academic and healthcare organizations in taking precautions to protect its workforce by suspending international business travels along with domestic travels to conferences or large gatherings.
